Welcome to the Datadefender Computer Security website! This site is about how you can keep your data and personal privacy secure from attack. We have download links for the latest antivirus products, up to date information on the latest security threats and details of what to do if your computer becomes infected with a virus, trojan or other malicious software.
Prevention is always better than cure and defending your computer against malicious software is definately more effective than trying to clear up the damage afterwards. Antivirus software is an important part of this defence, but which anti virus program? Read our reviews of the best antivirus programs available today and they will help you decide which is the right one for you.
Have you ever asked yourself 'who writes computer viruses?'. Click here for information on the sort of people who produce malicious software, their motives and details of different methods of malware attack.
It is vitally important to be aware of all possible threats and guard against them. Typical threats are attacks from malware (malicious programs). These include viruses, trojans, adware and spyware. See the glossary for a full list of definitions.
So how can I protect my computer from attack?
A lot can be accomplished by simply guarding against risks - not opening suspicious email attachments and being careful which websites you visit - but you also need to have a good antivirus program to make your system fail safe. Most modern antivirus software detects all types of malware, not just viruses. See the antivirus section for reviews on the latest programs on the market today, comparison of features and recommendations.
Free antivirus software
We do not recommend that you rely on free Antivirus or Anti-spyware programs. Some of them are quite good and some come from major companies that also produce paid-for software. In general they have less features and do not offer comprehensive protection from all digital threats. As with many things you get what you pay for.
The question is, how much to you value the data on your computer and your personal privacy? Is it worth risking all of that depending on some free software that may still leave you open to attack?
If you are on a tight budget, free is better than nothing, but please be aware of the risks. AVG, Avira and Avast! are the best known providers of free software. AVG also has a paid-for version which is reviewed separately on this site. Here are the download links if you want them, but we strongly recommend upgrading to one of the leading brands as soon as possible:
See the section on Computer Diagnostics for some easy steps to make your computer run faster and some reviews on Diagnostic Software packages.
